Motor Racing Timing: Transponder Loops, Race Control and Broadcast Graphics

From karting to FMSCI circuit races, the timing model is the same: every car carries a transponder, every loop in the track is an antenna, and a race control system stitches it into a live leaderboard.

Transponder-based loop timing

Circuit racing — Formula classes, touring cars, karting, two-wheelers — is timed using transponders mounted on each vehicle and induction loops buried in the track surface. The dominant supplier worldwide is MyLaps (TranX series for cars, X2 for karting). The transponder ID is logged at every loop crossing, producing sector and lap times to the millisecond. The race control software (MyLaps Orbits / Toolkit, Apex Timing, or RaceResults Motorsport modules) is the source of truth for grid, lap chart, leaderboard and race result.

Race control room setup

  • Decoders at start/finish and at one or more sector splits, on a dedicated timing LAN
  • Race control PC running Orbits / Apex Timing with race director console, clerk-of-course console and a separate stewards screen
  • Live timing publishing to web (Apex Timing live, RaceResults Online or custom)
  • Pit-wall tablets showing team-specific live timing
  • Trackside giant LED with leaderboard, sector colours and gap-to-leader
  • Flag tower / signal control panel integrated with race control

Broadcast graphics for motorsport

Motorsport graphics are some of the most demanding in live sport. Standard package includes a permanent leaderboard, gap-to-leader and gap-to-next callouts, sector colour bug (purple / green / yellow / red), tyre compound indicators, pit lane status, virtual safety car / yellow flag overlays, fastest lap stings, and a live position-change ticker. Premier productions add on-board ticker, predicted lap-time overlay and GPS-based track map with car positions.

Broadcast graphics typically include lower-thirds for athlete names and bios, an on-screen scoreboard or 'bug' fed live from the scoring system, dynamic start lists, results pages, head-to-head comparisons, sponsor bumpers, replay wipes, and end-of-session summary cards. Output is usually delivered over SDI from a graphics engine (vMix, Singular.live, CasparCG, or a federation-supplied template pack) into the ATEM or production switcher.
