Governing bodies and rule-driven scoring
Pickleball is governed internationally by the International Pickleball Federation (IPF) and the USA Pickleball Association rulebook, with the PPA Tour and APP Tour as the leading pro circuits. The scoring quirks (rally vs side-out scoring depending on format, server-1 / server-2 indicators in doubles, freeze rule at 10-all in some formats) make a structured scoring app substantially more reliable than a flipboard.
What a tournament needs
- Tournament management software with bracket / round-robin support — PickleballBrackets.com, PicklePlanner or a custom build
- Referee scoring tablet per court with auto-handling of server number, side-out and timeouts
- Court-side LED or LCD scoreboard fed from the referee tablet
- Optional video review (2-camera) for line calls and non-volley-zone foot faults
- Live web results page and push / WhatsApp notifications for match calls and scores
- Broadcast graphics for at least the show court
Broadcast graphics for pickleball
PPA / APP-style graphics use a corner score bug with team names, game score, current server indicator (S1 / S2), and timeout count. Add lower-thirds with player bios and ranking, sponsor bumpers, replay wipes, shot-speed callouts where a radar is available, and an end-of-match stat card.
Broadcast graphics typically include lower-thirds for athlete names and bios, an on-screen scoreboard or 'bug' fed live from the scoring system, dynamic start lists, results pages, head-to-head comparisons, sponsor bumpers, replay wipes, and end-of-session summary cards. Output is usually delivered over SDI from a graphics engine (vMix, Singular.live, CasparCG, or a federation-supplied template pack) into the ATEM or production switcher.
