Volleyball Technology: FIVB Scoring, Data Volley, Video Challenge and Broadcast

FIVB events run on an e-Scoresheet, a Data Volley analytics workflow, and a Hawk-Eye-powered Video Challenge System. Here is the full picture for a national-level event.

Scoring and analytics

FIVB sanctioned matches are recorded on the e-Scoresheet, a tablet application that replaced the paper scoresheet at all FIVB World Tour and senior international events. Alongside the official scoresheet, the scout's bench runs Data Volley (Data Project) — a real-time tagging tool that records every contact, sets up rotation analysis, and provides the head coach's tablet with live efficiency stats.

Video Challenge System

FIVB uses a Hawk-Eye-powered Video Challenge System with up to 14 cameras at premier events. Either coach can throw a challenge brick within 5 seconds for ball in/out, antenna touch, foot fault on serve, net touch, or block-touch. The video referee adjudicates from a booth and the decision is locked into the e-Scoresheet.

Court setup checklist

  • First and second referee scoring tablets / e-Scoresheet
  • Court-side LED scoreboard (sets, points, server, timeout count)
  • Data Volley workstation at each team's bench
  • Video Challenge System for the show court
  • Live web results portal (federation site) and notifications for fixtures, half-set and final scores
  • Broadcast graphics engine (vMix / Singular.live) reading from e-Scoresheet feed

Broadcast graphics for volleyball

Corner score bug with set scores, point score, server indicator and timeout count; lower-thirds for player rotation; touch heatmap from Data Volley; ace / kill / block stings; challenge animation; end-of-set summary; end-of-match stat card with attack efficiency, blocks and digs.

Broadcast graphics typically include lower-thirds for athlete names and bios, an on-screen scoreboard or 'bug' fed live from the scoring system, dynamic start lists, results pages, head-to-head comparisons, sponsor bumpers, replay wipes, and end-of-session summary cards. Output is usually delivered over SDI from a graphics engine (vMix, Singular.live, CasparCG, or a federation-supplied template pack) into the ATEM or production switcher.
